Organizer: Kara Turner (Event Director)

COME AND TRY IT:

This is a general introduction to orienteering maps and the sport of orienteering for those who haven't tried it before -- a program for the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg. We will spend a bit of time learning about the symbols on the map and then we'll head into the woods together on a map walk to find some control flags and learn basic navigation techniques (orienting and thumbing the map). We'll end the session with a mini orienteering course for you to try in pairs or family groups. The focus is on fun rather than speed! PLEASE REGISTER FOR THIS (FREE) EVENT WITH MODL.

SCORE-O TRAINING SESSION:

For those who have already been orienteering and are interested in a training session / developing your navigation skills, there will be a Score-O course set out from 12 until 4pm. A compass and safety whistle is required and a watch is recommended. Help yourself to a map in the parking lot. We'll be using the classic punches and it will be self-timed. It's a beautiful time of year in the Jubilee Woods so come and enjoy some pressure-free orienteering.

ALL COURSES CLOSE AT 4pm.

PARKING: The start/finish is in the new parking lot to the south (the uphill side) of the tennis courts on Hawthorn Road. The town will be busy due to the Scarecrow Festival/Fall for Mahone Bay event so we recommend you approach from Blockhouse and come down Kinburn St. There are no washrooms available. (The closest public washrooms are on Edgewater St.)

FEES: This is a free training event. Please register with MODL for the Come and Try It. Register here for the Score-O so we know how many maps to print.

COVD: All COVID regulations for outdoor sports apply.

Participants in the Score-O are required to read and comply with the Orienteering Canada COVID-related guidelines below.

You must have a 2021 OANS waiver and membership form on file to participate in this event (if you have already completed these forms in 2021, there is no need to do another one). These can be filled out online here REGISTRATION AND WAIVER .

On the day of the event, please complete the COVID HEALTH DECLARATION. Please do not come to the event if you have travelled outside of the province in the previous 14 days or have any COVID symptoms.

EMERGENCIES:

For emergencies please contact 911. For non-emergency event issues please call Kara Turner 902-980-0131.

Thanks for reading all the way to the end :)
